hamilton qtc question

Post29 Sep 2010, 00:31

hello all
I have a working stainless steel hamilton qtc like the one in this pic:

http://www.ledwatches.net/photo-pages/hamilton2.htm

This is one of my favorite ones, so i bought it a new suite, a gold body (no module) and matching gold band and here is the question, the watch came with a case back in stainless steel which says the following:

Hamilton Watch Company
Stainless Steel
071960
998974

the band says the following
Champion
1/40 gold 10 k R.G.P

does this have the wrong case back ? Should it be gold instead of stainless? is this body gold tone?

Thanks
gus

Also i was watching a rerun of Kojak where he is looking at his watch a gold Hamilton QTC, and checks the time by pushing the time button. :)

Gus/Smokefrog/Kojak,

Fabulous watch - I love the linear/curved design on the QTC/QED - it's right up there at the top of the list. A very stylish and classy "classic".

As far as I know, the Hamiltons always had stainless steel backs. I'm pretty sure that you've got the "right" case back. The Hamilton case backs look almost identical to the P2/P3 case backs except that they have both a serial number and also a date code as you've noted. They Pulsar case backs have just the serial number on top - no date code at the bottom.

Here's a previous thread on the topic of Hamilton marked case backs:
http://www.dwf.nu/viewtopic.php?t=1600

from Bruce:
"Though the parts are dimensionally compatible, remember, Hamilton never made a solid gold watch, and all of their stainless and GF watches had stainless backs. Also, they all had a serial number AND date code on the caseback [and both of these numbers always had six digits]. The P2 back has a 5-digit serial [which is consistant with the early P2s], and no date code."

-abe.

I think the Hamilton and the omega look similar, they both have rectangular screens and the bands look the same. so basically if you close one eye and squint and have the lights turned off my lowly Hamilton looks like a omega.

The Hamilton back would properly indicate 10k or 14k rgp, but yes, stainless back. If you want a proper back I'll send you one for $8(postage). If you get a working module, I have a few pieces of NOS glass for that model.

There were a few (early?)gold-filled P2 backs that say Hamilton Watch Co., 14k gold filled. Super rare, I've only seen 2. Each person claimed to be original owner, says that's how it came. :-?

As far as i can tell the original hamiltons (one button ) came boxed as qtc models. After the date model was introduced they changed to qed, then to qed II frontier modules. Its all a bit confusing ,but this may help in matching up proper boxes with the original models.

So the one button Hamilton is a qtc and the 2 button is a qed.

thanks
