, correct me if I'am wrong but isn't Switzerland a non European country thus duty has to be paid on imports...just like buying from the US...

Basically correct, only that Switzerland IS European, but not member of the EU. I live 20km from the Swiss border, and theoretically you have to declare ANYTHING you take over the border - even if you take it back 5h later, you need to fill in a form called "Carnet". If you don't and get caught, at least you'll have a long discussion with the Swiss customs officer.
We once designed an electronic device for a Swiss company and had some trouble when we just took it over the border to present the prototype to our customer. On the way back for some reason we were asked to open the trunk/boot - and in there in a little box was an electronic device about the size of a pack of cigarettes - our prototype.
"How much is this worth" the officer asked.
"Hard to say, maybe 20 EUR" we said.
"What is it?"
"It's a .... we designed for <well> ... today presenting prototype ..."
"Ah, a prototype - so it must be worth more than just the parts price".
"Hm, yes, maybe, it depends."
"So what did you charge your customer for it?"
"Difficult to say. The developmentr cost about 30.000 Euro, and 3 prototypes are included in this price - but of course you can't say that one prototype costs 10.000 Euros".
"I see. Ok. So what would you charge me if I destroyed this prototype?"
And so it went on and on and on. About 20 minutes later we were finally allowed to pass without having to pay anything...
BTT: very nice watch, and it appears to be in near-perfect condition. Worth its US $480 plus duty, IMO
