How ány clock works

Post09 Mar 2011, 13:40

Explaining things to my son I concised the matter and thought it might be nice to share for no purpose other than that.

In the basics ány accurate clock is a power source providing energy for a driver, controlled by an oscilator, of a display of ´time´.

Wether that is
gravity pulling on a weight pushing gears controlled by a pendulum to move hands or
a loaded spring pushing gears controlled by a balance wheel to move drum with numbers or
a battery providing energy to ditto controlled by a quartz oscilator or
or ditto a driver of a digital display,
it is all the same in the basics:
A power source energising a driver controlled by an oscilator to represent time on a display.

Here an illustration of an electronic digital watch next to the block sceme of things
and a ditto analogue one next to the block sceme of the e-motor part it has.

Image

1 = oscilator
4 = driver
5 = display
6 = power source

2 and 3 are the repeater/ampifier of the quart oscilator and the frequency devider which are superfluous in the grand sceme that shows no block for the gearbox between driver and display of the analogue either.

If we would transcribe the block numbers;

1 = O (for oscilator)
4 = D (for driver)
5 = T (for time)
6 = E (for energy)

The formula for ány clock would be:
E + (D x O) = T

Have fun,

Petrus
