http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PastyThe old ladies at a church near me make these twice a year for sale to the public....it is a tradition in our household to buy a few dozen for freezing.
There is a
Pasty Kitchen restaurant in Los Alamitos, CA. My wife and I tried pasties once and found them to be a bit too bland.
I think it really depends on who makes them, and what your expectation is. And the crust/pastry has to be flavorful in it's own right. And as one site points out, you know the pastie is not right if it has carrot in it. Never, ever, carrot. Rutabaga/Swedes is the correct item, along with potatoe and onion. Los Alamitos - maybe it was the climate. People in a colder climate don't forget they are supposed to be the workingman's "Hot Pocket"
meal.
