Help!! How do I put this back on the watch?

Post03 May 2012, 23:32

Popped the back off my watch but it won't pop back on

Tried a watch back press - no luck

Even my well respected local jeweller couldn't get it to go back on

Does anyone have any ideas please - pics enclosed to show the watch

Does the back seem to "big" or too "small." Also, were you the one who popped the watch back case off? Was taking the back off a desperately hard to do process, or did it just pop right off? Please get back to us on this.

I would put some light oil on a piece of paper towel or cloth and lightly coat the inside of the rim of the case back. I have done that before and it definitely helps.

Make sure the dies you use with the press are an exact fit. Sometimes you have to try several dies for the "perfect fit". (my experience)

The suggestion to oil the edge could cause problems, since many of the old gaskets will swell up if exposed to an oil - jeweler's grease is better to keep o hand for that job. It is finely ground/milled cured silicone mixed with some silicone gel that doesn't dry. Clear and clean.

Cracking the crystal is the worry - my way of handling that dillema was to make some replacement bottom dies out of a piece of
softer plastic(old plastic cutting board) and making an indention in the middle. I have one with a square slot in the middle and a few different rounds. Then you can crank the case press with no fear. Good luck.

Slightly daft suggestion but are the batteries (assuming you changed them) the right size? Some of the
same diameter are different 'heights'. Too much force in this case will crack the module circuit board..

Cheers

Thanks for all the suggestions

I did tey refitting without the batteries and then without the mocvement but no joy

I did pop the back off and it came off really easy

I will try the suggestion of making up a bespoke die as I share your fear of breaking the front too

i will try this weekend and report back

Many Thanks

i use a old wooden ruler ..i protect the cristal if needed and put the ruler on the case and push hard :-D
if it don't work, you have to check out that the backplate is all even and don't have a bump in the middle. Maybe its transformed a bit after years of popping up and off.

Make sure there are no burrs around the rim preventing the case back from going back on, the rim can can sometimes get scuffed when the case back is removed.
Once the case back has been refitted sell the watch and use the money to buy one with a screw down case back - otherwise it will drive you nuts every time the batteries need changing.
