The suggestion to oil the edge could cause problems, since many of the old gaskets will swell up if exposed to an oil - jeweler's grease is better to keep o hand for that job. It is finely ground/milled cured silicone mixed with some silicone gel that doesn't dry. Clear and clean.
Cracking the crystal is the worry - my way of handling that dillema was to make some replacement bottom dies out of a piece of
softer plastic(old plastic cutting board) and making an indention in the middle. I have one with a square slot in the middle and a few different rounds. Then you can crank the case press with no fear. Good luck.
