Heuer Chronosplit LED-LCD

Post12 Mar 2013, 05:35

Hi,
I just got a Heuer Chronosplit LED-LCD and after a good clean up it is up and running.
Two things concerns me:
First: Does it have a insulation film or anything that goes between the module and the back case cover. It seems that the batteries contacts will the back cover. (I got the watch already open and in pieces).
Second: The crystal is cracked (on the corner of the case) is there a way to fix it other than replace it (is it even possible to be replaced?!). But weirdly, even I after I had removed the plate, it can not be felt neither on the outside nor the inside. It looks like a "trapped" air ball inside on the display (like a sandwich), i know it doesn't make sense

Other than that is working like a charm :-D
Any tip will be more than welcome.
Thank you

Many years ago, I found a working Chronosplit on ebay, but the case and strap were battlescared. I usually call them Chronospluts because the design of the internal module makes it prone to being unreliable with exposed chips and wirebonds - no potting compound was used and the thing is sooo easy to ruin if you open it up.

Anyway, I dismantled the whole thing and sent the case off to a specialist to make a new crystal. He cut and fitted a new one. They rebrushed the case/strap, and charged about £150 for the lot (IIRC). Result = it look superbly restored, and added £1k+ to the value. I subsequently did quite a few more myself, but always had the crystal cut/fitted by the same jeweller.

Hi Diginut,
Thank you for the info. But after I hook my catches I don't let them go, I want to keep this one (and all other ones, lol lol).
Im pretty bad for small details and things like restoring and such, so, I will leave this for the experts :-D
Would you refer anybody here in the US that would be capable and willing to restore this watch for me (not the module, it is working 100%). If so, please let me know. You said around US$ 200 right?!
Thank you for sharing the pics of your new-old Heuer, it came out beautiful from the "facelift", :ha:

The bubble you indicate isn't in the display at all, it is between the crystal and the underlay.

Hi Retroleds,
Just quick glimpsy and like always, knowledge, knowledge, and more knowledge, lol lol lol :grin1:
Is that why it can not be felt?! But it is a pice of crystal broken and trapped inside right (on the sandwich of crystal and underlay)?!!
Is the underlay a "subcrystal"?! (it may sound estupid, but im sorry, im learning from my own mistakes)
I took the watch apart and i cleaned it on my little ultrasonic machine and incredibly i could not figure it out how to reach it.
It seems to be a thick piece of glass (sandwich) with the middle one cracked.
Any suggestion on how or who could fix this?
Thanks once again :-D

I've shown below a random set of pics I have from various Chronosplits I've repaired in the past. I've picked up a few from ebay where the seller says the usual 'just needs a battery' etc, only to find that an entire chip has somehow fallen off the PCB / Carrier!!! ( see 4th pic with chip missing from upper half of PCB)

It looks to me as if the crack is on the inside of the glass where it meets the metal rim around the case. Hopefully it wont have damaged the Heuer bezel beneath it.

To get the bezel out, just open up the case back, gently remove the module (its super fragile …) and the bezel should just fall out / lift out with ease.

Hope this helps :)

OHHH wowwwwww!!!!

What about the warning first?!

VIEW DISCRETION IS ADVISED!!!!

Looks like Christmas!!!!!!! Cheers :Prost:

I have the watch disassembled, but as I said the crack seems to be on the "middle" of the crystal. I know it sounds stupid, but I can't explain any different.
It can not be felt, even if I try to feel gently passing a wood tooth pick, it just slides over the crystal without any problem.
Are you sure that is not three pieces of glasses put together?!
I'm sorry for be doubting, but it is what I see. Or maybe it is crack but it just stays tight to the crystal itself and can not be felt. Just an internal crack?!

(ooohhh look the screws I need, the band I need, the watches I want, oh my!!!!! Just kidding :-D )

I have my module out and it is working 100% :-D

Thanks for the attention (and the pictures).

Solved the mystery bubble!!!
The piece of crystal came off (so big that created a hole all the way to the front of the crystal), and yes it was cracked but was still attached to the main piece. The case suffered no damaged (the bezel part underneath it, to hold/support the crystal in place).
I'm the only owner of an Heuer with window  (I don't know if I show be proud of).
HELP!!!!!!!!! :-(

Hi Charger105,

No, the only Heuer Chronosplit I have is this one, SS. You might be confused looking at somebody else post or maybe because the previous pics I posted was with a different source of light (the little lamp that I have on my desk, yellowish) and this later picture I took using indirect sunlight (on my patio). :O`~
Thanks

Your un-restored watch really looks yellowish. I thought it was definately gold.
Anyway, it looks awesome now ! Looks like an excellent restoration. I'm jealous

Hi Charger,
You wasn't the only one :grin1:
And I really wish I had another one in gold :fool:
I never wore none of my watches (from my collection). But, I couldnt resist to wear this Heuer last Friday to a very important meeting on my job with some high end clients. I was worth it, jaws dropped left and right, lol lol lol :O`~
Everybody remembered and was more than happy to see an "old" Heuer Chronosplit and with LED what?!?!?! (the old red watches, remember?!?!?!) lol lol lol. It was so many questions about it :ha:
What nobody could understand is how come I have a watch that is worth more than my car (a very old beaten up old old old mazda 626) M:)W:)M
The watch is safe and sound back on my watches display and will remain there for the posterity :amen:
They will never understand :pimp:
