Hamilton QED module 3013

Post22 Nov 2013, 13:13

Any ideas what happened to my Hamilton. I think someone has been playing with the module!

I just picked this up as I fancied a Hamilton to wear. Its not working(I knew this) but upon opening the case something seems wrong. Looks like there has been some work done.

Im happy to have a play around to see if I can get some life as the rest seems in pretty good condition.

many thanks

Adam

Your watch has been fitted with an ESD-327SMO...a self-contained 32.768KHz surface-mount oscillator. I have seen a lot of these, and done a lot of these. The capacitor (the disc-shaped object to the right of the smo) is something new; I've never needed to use one to get the part to work, so that's a bit of a mystery, since there's already a capacitor in the package. Also looks like he's got the blue wire connected to the wrong side of the trimmer capacitor...it should be hooked to the other side of the white ceramic insulating section. If the watch isn't working, I'd yank the external cap, and re-connect the wire, and see if that does the trick. If not, there may be deeper issues in the module.

thanks Bruce

Are you able to mark my photos up so I know exactly what to change.

many thanks

Not that adept at using Photoshop, I'm afraid. Just pull that disc capacitor completely out of the circuit, and connect the wire going to the cylindrical trimmer to the other side of the white ceramic insulator (the end opposite the screw adjustment end). There's no need for an external cap; there's already a (really!) tiny one inside the oscillator package. The crystals in these are rated for + or - 20ppm of frequency tolerance, so the watch could at worst gain or lose about 1.5 seconds/day, but typically run on the plus side, and this connection arrangement effectively bypasses the trimmer, so you essentially get what you get, in terms of timekeeping accuracy (still, WAY better than a non-working watch, and preferable to a complete module replacement, in my opinion).

I may be way off the mark here, but wouldn't it be prudent before ripping the module apart to remove that 8pf disc capacitor and change the wires around, to first determine if the oscillator is operational? Simply installing batteries and placing the watch or module near the sensing head of a watch testing device would answer that question. That added capacitor and wire may very well be correctly installed by the one who attempted the repair for the oscillator module they used, which may not be an ECS-327SMO device. The capacitor may have been added to increase, decrease or replace the value of the internal capacitor so that the trimmer capacitor had the range/ability to pull the oscillator onto the center frequency of 32.768 KHz, rather than allow the oscillator to run off frequency. The data sheet for the ECS-327SMO lists the frequency stability between -10 ~ +60 degrees Centigrade as -60ppm to +30ppm, which is different than what +/- ppm level the oscillator is actually tuned too coming out of the factory. The data sheet only lists a typical 32.768KHZ regarding the output frequency and does not list a tolerance of +/- ppm such +/-20ppm as stated.

Joe

Id love to get it working but dont have any equipment other than a micro soldering iron. I wish I did and the knowledge to make the tests required but I dont. Thats why I asked the question. I didnt pay a huge amount and would really like one of these kojak watches working so I thought it was worth the risk that I might be able to get it working.

Thanks for responding Joe, its great to get all feedback.

kind regards

I thought Id update as I have good news. After leaving it alone for a while I went back and tried again. This time all is well. Thanks to all.

I have another with the dreaded 0 well at the moment its a 4, this one is a Hamilton module. Any ideas? I looked at changing the quartz as Im not getting a reading from my versitime. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement?

Both watches have short bracelets . Is it possible to find the links or should I go for a bracelet expander
