TIMETRON DSM batteries help!

Post05 Dec 2013, 21:33

Ive not seen this watch before. Im pretty certain its a DSM but has unusual batteries to even start seeing whether it works I need to source some batteries or an alternative. Here are some photos. Quite an exciting find I think, even if it doesnt work. I wonder if its where Seiko got the Timetron name from?

It appears to be a stack of seven or eight button cell batteries in series (386's?) can you not just replicate what is already there? Maybe even reuse the original tube?

No photo just a mention of the model

type 'timetron dsm'

Its a great design it reminds me of my favourite Casiotron. Unfortunately only made for ladies. I would kill for a mans version

Adam,

Love the styling! Awesome find. Very cool (as is almost anything 70s with the word "Tron" in the name).

8 cells = about 12 volts so probably had an electronic lighter battery in it- try an A27 (LR926, MN27, EL812) which measures about 26mm by 7mm or an E23A (LRV08, MN21, A23) which measures about 26mm by 9mm. Cheapest place to buy these is Poundland who will sell you a small selction card of 1*A27, 2*E23 and 2*N cells for £1 (and they are fairly good quality!).

Well progress

Thanks to Tom for the poundland link. I found some batteries. I had to remove the hard rubber and put some pare bend to stop it shorting but it does fit.

And I have life, well digits anyway. I have seen a colon and at present it says 10 past 1 with no colon. There is no movement from the watch yet but i'll leave it for a while and see what happens.

The display looks very similar to the Gladius I have.

Any ideas on how to get the heart pumping greatly appreciated.

regards

Adam

It actually started working for a while with flashing colon and minute increment so it might just be a power issue. It had a lot of corrosion on the battery terminals.

As it has no buttons how are you meant to change the time?

What a cool DSM! I guess that the module might've been probably made by Ness, as the display looks very similar to the one of your Gladius DSM, which uses a Ness module. Maybe the setting was done with a magnet, like the ladies version of Microma LCDs. :-)

EDIT: It seems that it has a reed switch, judging by this picture:

So I guess that there are two reed switches at each side of the watch, which makes me think it's a magnet-set model.

Hmmm good question, could the watch be a prototype?

Perhaps it might be an impression of mine, but it seems that there's a reed switch under the quartz tube, on the left. I guess that it might be a magnet-set module. ;-)

Great catch Adam!!!So damn 70's
I'm dreaming a dsm watch
Some watches are made to last only as long as they are fashionable
Some watches, simply are not made to last
Seiko watches are designed to withstand the ravages of both time and fashion
Someday perhaps, all watches will be made this way

Unfortunately still hasn't moved again(worked for about 3 minutes) and the first digits are missing. Still shows fixed number.

According to the Doensen website http://doensen.home.xs4all.nl/l1.html Timetron was a Hong Kong product released in 1973 containing a Microma module - so maybe thats what a (semi) live Microma DSM looks like!

It might also be similar to the last watch in the first photo here http://ledwatch.w.interia.pl/popularscience1972nov2.jpg
