Cibernetic stem-type early LCD watches

Post10 Jun 2017, 03:46

Just received an interesting lot of early LCD watches - Cibernetic branded.
I was unable to find any info about this brand on the web.
These watches were marketed in Brazil in the 70s.
Does anyone know something about them?
(there are some pics in the album below):

Nice watches!
The lettering has a "microma and/or Nepro" look.

And make sure to check this DWF member's awesome site:

Hi,
1. The integrated circuit (IC) is made probably by SSS (Solid State Scientific Corp.), the same who made the ICs for early Optel's DSM and LCD watches - with some involvement from some European/Swiss companies - 'Société des Garde-Temps S.A.' (SGT) (so this may explain the French made Case - as it is mentioned inside the caseback, since the French Stainless Steel cases would have been probably cheaper than the Swiss made ones :) ).
"It was equipped with a quartz crystal by Motorola and an IC by SSS (Solid State Scientific). SGT sold about 15,000 pieces."
https://doensen.home.xs4all.nl/l1.html
2. The crown based setting - as in the early Gruen (Teletime) and Optel LCD watches - may date the watch from cca 1972 (the starting year of above mentioned SSS Corporation) to cca 1975.

Thus my best guess is that these very interesting watches of the unknown "Cibernetic" brand may have inside an early Optel module with an early Optel Field Effect (FE) LCD  , using an SSS Corp. integrated circuit, probably very similar with the 1973 Pallas Quartz FE LCD watch (but NOT identical since this Pallas Quarz has a "diamond shaped hour:minutes separator"), mentioned in Doensen's book and presented in the photo below:

One can read more about the early Optel DSM and LCD watches on Doensen's book and on excellent Piotr's website - crazywatches.pl (pl see the URLs below):
https://doensen.home.xs4all.nl/l1.html
and an interesting (hi)story about Optel's early DSM and FE LCDs from Fortune Magazine 1973:

Hope this helps,
:dwf:

Some more infos...but please post also a photo of the face of the watch to let us to see the LCD's hour:minutes :grin1:
1. You're module seems to be also quite similar (BUT NOT identical! :grin1: ) with this Longines LCD L775.1 module from a non-working Adam's watch, having the same USA made SSS (Solid State Scientific) 5437 IC and (probably - because in your watch the quartz crystal cannot be seen) also the same Motorola quartz crystal (please see the photo below from Adam -www.digital-watch.com).
viewtopic.php?f=64&t=4618
2. The MagicDigital website stated that this L775.1 module was especially designed/made for Longines, probably in USA or Swiss(???):
"Das Modul ist eine Eigenentwickliung für Longines, Cal L775.1, vermutlich Schweiz oder USA."
http://www.digitalwatches.de/index.htm? ... UHREN1.htm
2. In the above mentioned NewDWF post, user charger105 stated that the 74xx number may be seen as the production year of the IC - 1974, same as your SSS IC, so Your watch may be then produced somewhere in 1974, or at least in 1975...
"In case you hadn't realised, the IC indicates a 1974 date. Nice and early ! "
