Automatic Watch Winder Power Supply Question

Post29 Dec 2018, 22:34

Several years ago I purchased an automatic watch winder, unfortunately a while ago I dropped the power lead and broke the adaptor into pieces, I would like to have this running again but I don't know which power supplies I need - can anyone help me out?

It looks as if it's a USA import and I assume the first adaptor (also broke) is to convert from UK 240v to US 110v and the second one (the one in pieces) is to convert to the correct power input for the winder......obviously I don't have a clue so I need someone to point me in the direction of the two converters\adaptors that I need, here's some photos......

Hi Bucko.
The label on the back of the unit is a bit confusing. It refers to an input and an output. The watch winder only has an input though.
I assume they are referencing the whole 'system'......the 2 power supplies and the unit itself.
Looks like they couldn't get a 240AC--6VDC power supply in the US, so they used 2 devices to achieve the same.

At the end of the day, the winder needs 6VDC. I'm sure you've got, or can get a 6V power supply. You can cut the connector off the original one if necessary. Make sure you connect it up so that centre is negative.

Something like this should be suitable:

Rgds,
Andrew.

It looks like the input refers to the winder itself, ie it needs 120v 60hz supply (USA standard supply), the output refers to the output from the little transformer/ rectifier unit that i assume should be inside the winder (pic 3). As Charger correctly says the winder is looking for 6vdc, I'd get a unit capable of supplying 1 Amp. The only other thing to be aware of is not to mess the polarity up, the convertor on ebay has a centre +, irrelevent if you intend to cut the connector off it though

Thanks :-D

Could you point me in the direction of a compatible convertor as i don't know how to tell the polarity of the centre. I would prefer to buy something that is good to go without cutting off the connectors.

The bit your looking for is as per pic. This one shows the output DC socket has a centre positive pin. Its not easy to find centre neg pins , i just looked. (maybe it an american thing where they insist on putting things in the wrong place , like their car steering wheels :ha: ) Much easier to cut it off or use a plug to fit in that socket where you decide where the wires go. Be careful if you search for "centre negative " a lot of the ebay sales refer to the 240v earth pin as "centre negative", which is very mis-leading

Found one from China but only 300ma?

If I cut off the plug is it obvious which wires to connect together?

Best to use a cheap multimeter, that will indicate polarity

Would item number 311947392886 work?

It's says 600ma but 800ma on the plug.
