The only exception I can see is Abe's situation. It'd be a crime to butcher his 25-IC module and swap a P2 substrate onto his carrier. As far as I know, Abe needs a carrier to be manufactured, to which a P2 substrated can be attached.

Rgds.

Nobody ever wanted to destroy historically important timepieces or values. It´s no secret that early P2 modules and the upgraded P1 modules share the same circuit. However because you cannot easiliy remove the metal carrier from the E/D module (the quartz sticks to it) I would build a replacement for the 6 digit module. I mean if you are planning to copy the module holder anyway, does it make the watch more original if you install an early P2 module? With the 6 digit SASM replacement module the watch looses no value at all, because Abe can re-install his E/D easiliy at any time.

As I said, Abe's situation is different.
For all other P1s, there's no requirement for an aftermarket module.

Whether you use a P2 module in Abe's watch, or an aftermarket one, as you say, doesn't make a lot of difference really.
However, it would be pretty cool to see a 6 digit version in his watch..........I'd like to see that 8-)

The current eBay P1 is certainly tempting for a relatively new LED collector like me, and the non-working module would matter about 0% to me as I don't think I'd ever split the watch.

But would this be the best course of action, in the opinion of expert collectors?

Good conversation - thank you

Hi. Wow, Hanno, I'm absolutely thrilled at the prospect of having a working P1. A 4 digit P1 module would be great, even if it's just a plain plastic carrier for a standard P2 module with a couple of reed switches added in. Even that would be super. I do very much enjoy working on these watch photographs and will be more than happy to help. I still have some work to do to get a more proper technique, but I'll work on that.

I don't see that there's any need to "butcher" any P1's in this process. Aside from the difficulty of opening the case, it was my impression that the carrier could be replicated easily enough without a need to modify the original. In that case, the P1 modules could be created as swap-in replacements, no harm done.

The holy grail of replacement modules would, of course, be a replica of a 6 digit 25 chip module. That sounds like it would at least require a redesign of the module carrier to accommodate the two displays and reprogramming of the micro-controller to drive the two displays. I'm not even sure what LEDs could be used for the displays since you have the problem of the little 2 digit seconds display (which had open wire bonds in the original). So that would be a ton of work. Still, you have to admit, it would be awesome to see a P1 running like the originals with their 25 chip modules. You could even fake the lettered chips to make it look more authentic. Even Bruce has to admit that it would be very, very cool to see that.

Hanno do you have any long term plans to make a SASM module for the Uranus calculator?

Well, not yet. A problem of the Uranus calculator exists in that the displays are directly bonded on the circuit board. In such a case I cannot swap the display but need new dies. That will be expensive. Very expensive.

Do you think I should launch a poll which module is in demand? Maybe the Frontier 2007 Chrono (used in Hamiltons, Breitlings or Securas + more) or the Sinclair watch? Is there demand for LCD modules?

Hanno

There would be a demand for Seiko G757 lcd modules certainly. Shame you cant sort out lcd panels as you make a killing on the Casio 103(blue thunder module). There are probably a lot more G757s in circulation so the potential for a lot more clients.
