What I need in a Pilots LED? any thoughts

Post17 Feb 2007, 08:01

Hi there,

What I need in a pilots LED:

1 six digit, 24 hour display

ex: 13:23:15

2 easy add or subtract hour for timezone change that does not affect the time set, that is, doesn't reset the seconds.

3 two letter day and date with and two letter month:

ex: SU:04:AP

4 count up timer with six digit display:

ex: 01:47:06

5 simutaneous settable count down timer, that is able to run at same time as count up timer. This will give me time to go and time left for a flight.

6 the ability to turn timers always on (i know it is hard on batteries but I need to see it for timing approaches without continuosly pushing buttons.

7 at least one alarm (willing to fore go this!)

8 as bright as Jeff's Majestyk

Reasons:

-Dark cockpit and red light does not affect night vision.

-I time the start of the leg to the finish for total time wheels up to wheels down.

-Flight attendants want to know time left for service.

-For short timing events I need to see the time without pushing buttons

-Alarm just for fun although would be used.

any thoughts, any takers!!!!???? what would it cost to design a board with bright led's and case up?

Cheers, Geoff

Ask forum user 'Simon A' he is a fully fledged jet jockey crossing the Atlantic in a Virgin Tube every day.... ''sigh...my hero''... I think he wears an Omega TC2, the most manly of leds. If we ask him nicely he may post a pic Ive seen of him on the flight deck 'flashing it'.

Hey Phil....

You have a good memory ! That was a few years ago, but you are absolutely correect.. I was wearing a TC2 in that picture... However, for work now, I stick to my Rolex Sub... Very rarely do I wear an LED these days.... Just chuck em in the safe !

Simon,

Two ships passing in the night, 767 pilot just did a 5 day London last, week, off to Sydney next week. My cockpit watch, usually my Glycine SST chronograph (one of 100 made in 1968, only 3 known of), and my walking watch, Glycine airman 1.

Recently though, been wearing my Majestyk II for domestic and my Omega TII for overseas just for a change.

Thats why I asked about what would be desired in a pilots led timer chronograph. The old casio lcd wr50 was a great one back in the late 80's.

Ah

Thats a lovely variation you have there Geoff.. Ah yes, those long night flights !! Just got back from a bitterly cold NY today, but I guess you are more acclimatised to the cold than I ?

Last time I wore an LED , may have been a Stainless QEDII (Hamilton) .. I have worn many and I have a bit of a reputation for wearing odd watches in the past... A while back I bought a Pulsar PRM back from the states and that raised some eyebrows ! I do like the MJ watches though.. particularly the blue one...

Hello Simon,

Actually, based in Vancouver, British Columbia; I think a little warmer than London but close, perhaps more rain here. Got to mow the lawn today and avoid the crocus and snowdrops that were planted in the grass!

Also known as the 'watch guy' at work as I restore alot of the pilot watches for the senior guys. See alot of the first model Seiko LCD world timers here, usually install new crystals and panels on those. Not many LED's although we do have a few nerds from the early 70's with their Pulsar I's.

Yeah its been mild here lately. The heat turned off at my place and I didn't even notice it until putting my hand on the vent.

I don't wear my led watches anymore when flying , the air is too dry and the static electricty is enormous , I've killed one or 2 in the past just by walking in the alley...

Question:

How do you know you are half way through a date with a Pilot?

Answer:

When he stops talking about flying and starts talking about himself!

Seriously though, I am looking for an HP 01 as it embodies the requirements I would like. I know the air is dry but as of today, I have yet to even spark myself from static in the aircraft. 30 years of flying and 20 in heavy jets. Now you have me concerned. Wouldn't want to spark out an 01.

Should I walk around with a grounding strap attached to my ankle ;-)

tha HP-01 betteries last around 1 year,i usually change them before they get discharged to avoid the risk of leaking and ruining the module(10/12 month seems to be safe enought).
I have never had any problem with static electricity for my led watches wearing them in the aircraft the air isn't much more dry than in a chicago clear winter day,i weared pulsars omegas and the hp01 and never had problems, but this is only my own experience.
You can also use the dynamic calculation of miles/time while you are in a cruise to calculate the time that takes you from waypoints,is very usefull for the ceckpoints during the ocean crossing especially because you can also combine it with the alarm..i know 767Jeoff will understand what i mean.

thanks LucaMD-11,

Yes it is the dynamic time function I am looking for. I have an HP41cx calculator with the same time functions/dynamic functions but would like to see it at night, hence the LED desire.

On the 767 we have a centre fuel pump off call at 400 Kilos indicated. Ever since the TWA 747 centre tank explosion they don't want dry centre tanks. Problem is, no eicas or warning messages to let you know, so other than staring at the tank guage a dynamic function linked to alarm for fuel flow would be a good start.

Cheers, Geoff

If you find 2 stainless steel for sale, I will take one. Still working on my first purchase.

Concerning static electricity, that's true reading a news paper doesn't generate too much of it, but as a flight attendant , we walk a lot (til 7 kms on a long haul flight) and that generate tons of static electricity .
i often see a spark when touching a metalic armrest.
Anyway, I'll check all the crew I'll meet to see if I see any with a HP01 on his wrist.

Just curious: they rely on the staff to check the fuel gauge for 400 kilos left? Why isn't there just some sort of automatic warning/alarm/whatever? Even my car gives a beep at ~7l fuel left (quite annoying feature BTW).

plus in the cargo aircraft we walk in a plastic floor,no acrilic or carpets that carge statis electricity, thats also why we dont get that much of it,the only way we get it is with the newspapers..
and for the curiosity the alert sounds only if you are running out of fuel, not if you have an empty thank out of tree.

You would think if it was important that an auto system would be installed, however, that would cost millions per aircraft and certification.

The neww 777 has an inert gas system that fills the center tank as it drains.

Cheers, Geoff
