HP 01 prototype? Any one know.

Post25 Apr 2007, 20:20

Just picked up an HP 01 case. The interesting characteristics about this case follow:

- the case back is correctly marked but has no serial number

- the crystal is unpolished and lacks the Hewlett Packard name.

The owner was an HP employee who worked in the watch production facility in Corvallis, Oregon and owned the watch from scratch. Sounds like a prototype not for sale to the public, speculation, I don't know?

The module is dead, I will see what can be done there, but I have a spare working module in really crappy case (the reason I bought this one) which I will swap out. The case has a black anodized keyboard bezel (no surprise there) in excellent condition and the keys although dirty are not worn and just need cleaning. The crystal is not good but read on.

I have a lead on crystals from a company in the US who have already drawn up the engineering diagrams for it and are faxing the info to me. They will not print the lettering on the dial (I will see what local company will do that) without permission from HP and we all know that is not forthcoming (earlier post). Would any body be interested in aquiring some of these as I would like to give them a production run number that won't break my bank.

I am also a calculator collector (summitt and HP early hand helds) and have a few spare plastic red Led covers. I am going to see how they cut and I know they polish perfectly, will let you know.

DOES ANYONE HAVE A SPARE HP 01 BRACELET STYLUS (lost mine and WANT another!)? Let me know.

I will be posting a photo-document of the prototype restoration as well as the pen stylus differences and keep youi updated on the crystal saga.

Cheers, as always, Geoff

Patiently waiting :D and a proud owner of a new Sychronar MK IV  . Income tax refunds are a wonderful thing and thanks Howard!

Lloyd, a little off topic but I wonder if you could do us a report on that GF Pulsar DateII that you just got on eBay, the other one about six months ago looked like it was a fake, Im sure we would be very interested to see some pics of the one you won, hopefully you can put this long asked question to bed, ''did Pulsar make a GF Date II ????''

Incase anyone didnt spot it:

Mr Frequency,

Will look into a few local companies that can enamel back the name in, other wise it will be blank. Maybe you could look around your area. Another forumer suggested that I look locally as the crystal maker will not do it without permission.

Cheers, Geoff

Hi Phil, Yes I'll give a report. I looked at the pics wondering if it was real. I took a long shot on it, and fingers crossed it will be authentic. Cant remeber was the other one on a Solid gold case ? I know the date button looked dodgy on that one. Cheers.

as suggested, contact Al for logo printing.
he has made better logos than original ones.

Phil the GF Date II arrived yesterday. Wow, i never thought a GF Date II existed. But its all 100% original. The date button is deffo factory. Strange thing is it has a clasp stamp of 12/72 ? with the early magnet holder. Case back number 17527. Maybe its a early Date II. Also its only 10k gold fill. Now maybe this is a reed problem but when you set the month with the magnet, you can take the magnet away holding time button to change the date. Now im no tech person, but this module looks different, ( It has a Pulsar stamp with Pat pending ). I'll take a pic now and post it up for the pro's to look at.

man, this is a RARE one!!!!!
the black silicon reminds the early P2 module but the rest is something in between the late P2 and also the P3. compare below.
for sure this is a low quantity watch or maybe a short run prototype.
the technology from this piece was significantly changed before the launch of the P3.

if possible, please take a few high-res pictures of both sides for future reference.
