Pulsar box for US $2400

Post07 Nov 2007, 01:07

Can anyone enlighten me why this Pulsar box sold for US $2,411.85?
I mean it's a box, not even a watch inside - but I know nothing about Pulsar boxes. Is it a P1 box? Even then...

Bloody cheap looking box for a watch that was that expensive - where's the walnut or solid oak.

Madness, utter madness...

It sold for that because I bid it up to $2386...at least, I have the watch that goes into it [three, in fact]. Boxes are "ephemera", well-classified, as they tend to disappear easily. Be that as it may, every P1 is an historically-significant timepiece, and the box is an important part of the overall package. Right now, there are only 30 accounted-for P1s, and only ten boxes...do the math. The setting magnet is another issue...only nine or ten of those around...and they make the difference between a complete watch, and an incomplete watch. I would object in the strongest possible terms to the characterization of the aquisition of such an important piece of Time Computer history as "madness"...I think it depends on ones' perspective; right now, I just wish I had gone higher.

I just can't fathom that kind of money for it. I absolutely agree that the P1 is worth it just from the rareness of them, but the dollar figures just kind of boggle the mind sometimes.

Something similar that I can relate to a little more would be finding a NOS part for a '48 Tucker automobile still in the box. They only made 50 of those cars and their value is just unbelieveable. That car also made a great movie. Watch "Tucker: The Man And His Dream" sometime if you haven't seen it already.

So if you can afford $2400 for a box then you're not mad, merely eccentric :-P . I say this from a position of not being able to afford a P1 box, let alone a P1 so it all seems crazy to me. It's your money, spending it on things you enjoy is the wise thing to do.

Of course this begs another question, what is the dollar difference between a P1 and a boxed P1? That $2400 could be seen to be a shrewd investment, especially if the winner had a magnet, papers etc...

I know the person who bought that very expensive box. Turns out he knew exactly what he was doing becuase he owns a P1 - but with no other parts.

When the box arrived, the outer box was in average condition, the inner box was near mint. And the best bit ... underneath the blue velvet lining was a small brown envelope with the gold 'P' shaped magnet !!! The seller didnt realise it was there.

So, the buyer looks nuts, but in reality he has just doubled the potential return on his P1 should he ever sell it. Its in mint condition, and I know he paid considerably less than average for it becuase it had no box !!

No Pain, no gain. He took a risk and it worked out. Lucky b*stard !

Ooooh I bet you do Bruce I bet you do :-P . However I humbly retract any slurs I might have cast on your sanity and apologise unreservedly. By LED standards your bid was one of the saner acts that I've seen on this forum - the daftest is actually getting into the lil' things in the first place....

Thanks for all the enlightenment. Now I understand :-)

Definitely true ;-)
Last week I lost my patience and bid for 50% over my self-imposed limit for that particular model and condition. It's on my wrist right now and I'm very happy :-) That's insane...
