Quick and silly question...

Post11 Nov 2009, 01:13

This came up on another watch forum: are all gold-filled Pulsars stainless steel underneath? I'm pretty sure they are, but then realized I may be wrong.

Thanks!
Sherry.

The GF Pulsars are definately not stainless underneath (where do they get this stuff?) I've sawed/chopped a few of them open, usually when someone has horribly cross threaded a watch and I've promised them I have another case if their module works.. They are a high quality jeweler's brass, with the thinnest layer of nickel to improve the bond of the gold to the brass. You almost never see the nickel layer, as it is less than a micron thick usually. Most of your cheaper "silver" colored watches were a white-grey pot metal(mainly zinc) with a flash plating over them, or in some cases a brassier pot metal with a plating over it. Cheaper gold-toned watches (I think CompuChron or Birks) are about 50/50 - some are white pot metal with gold "Stuff" over it, others are golden (brass) pot metal with "stuff" over them. My $0.02

Thanks for the info. When I first started collecting Pulsars in the mid-80's, a watchmaker at Birks told me specifically that GF Pulsar cases were SS underneath, plated with nickel to improve the gold bond.

I should have known the info was bogus, given it came from Birks. And to think they were the only local AD!
