Your batteries: #386, both go negative down, positive up. The battery conversion chart has good tips(I think) for determining correct polarity and specifically mentions the early Benrus you have at hand.

Don't be surorised if it works, those have proven to be a very sturdy module. Made by Texas Instruments for Benrus. It's direct predessesor is the module shown here (erroneously classified as a Texas Instruments, since determined that Wells was a line of Benrus and TI only made the module).
