Online Pulsar P1 Manual

Post18 Oct 2010, 02:29

Greetings,

In the spirit of historical preservation (and my own amusement), I digitized my P1 manual and made it available online:
http://www.abe-n-doren.com/private/pulsar_p1_manual.pdf

With the benefit of hindsight, some of the text is slightly amusing. Some favorite excerpts:

- on page 6:
"Your Pulsar is the world's first solid-state digital time computer to wear on your wrist. It is the ultimate in reliability, because Pulsar has no moving parts." - If only that were true!
- on page 11:
"Water Resistance - Pulsar's computer circuitry is hermetically sealed in a helium atmosphere inside its 18 kt. gold case. Neither water nor dirt can penetrate it." - Helium, huh? They really had plans for the P1 to live forever!
- on page 13:
"In the unlikely event your Pulsar ever needs service, consult your authorized Pulsar jeweler or call our laboratory collect." - So much for unlikely events!

Interesting reading Abe. I've never seen one of these manuals before.
I wonder if they were really ever filled with helium ? When you changed the batteries, you'd need to somehow pump it full of helium again.

I remember reading somewhere that it was theorised that the P-shaped magnets were intended as battery hatch "keys", but no-one was sure. This clearly states that they were intended for that purpose.

Abe:
May I make a copy of your scans available here and on www.ledwatches.net for posterity? Obviously giving you full credit.

Ed,

Yes, please, fee free to add this to your collection on www.ledwatches.net . I thought it might also go into the documentation library that you started here on dwf.

If you'd like higher resolution scans, let me know. The images that were used for this PDF are 640x640, which seemed like a good compromise between detail and file size. The resulting PDF is 4.5 MB @ 150 dpi (640x640 for a 4 inch page size).

I could also make a print quality PDF with the full resolution scans (1280x1280, 300 dpi for a 4 inch page size), which would be around 16 MB for the entire PDF.

Abe:
I would love the print quality one - 16 Mb is nothing these days. Or will be soon. :-)

Ed,

Here is the high resolution print quality version (18 MB):
http://www.abe-n-doren.com/private/puls ... _print.pdf

These scans were done at 600 dpi or 2560x2560 pixels per 4x4 inch page. The PDF process lessens the quality a little bit from the original scans, but since the scans are done at higher resolution than the actual printing, it doesn't really matter:

p.s. Do you have any concerns that having high res replications floating around on the 'net might result in counterfeit booklets? I'm guessing that it probably wouldn't be worth it to create bogus Pulsar booklets but you never can tell with some of the riff raff out there.

Gee, I'm hoping one of the roughly 40 P1 owners wouldn't be duped by a fake booklet. But seriously, not worried at all.

Thank you again - I'll get it up later today...having computer issues today.

How about watermarking the picture, I'am sure this can be done in Photoshop.
