P2 Makes a Huge Splash!

Post28 Jan 2011, 06:52

I just got my P2 back from retroleds.com and cant tell you how excited I am to finally have a working LED. I have owned this P2 for years and it was killing me seeing it just sitting in my box along side my other BOnd watches. Well, its back, and amazing!

The thing that I find most interesting is the amount of attention it has been getting. I am a watch guy. I own over 20 and wear them all. Never the same 2 days in a row. It is really rare when someone actually takes the time to notice or comment on any of them. That is not true with the P2...especially with women. On its debut outting, 3 women stopped me to ask about it. All amazed when I pushed the button. It is the only watch that my wife actually wants to wear as well. I thought this was very interesting. Such a timeless design. I am certainly in love:-)

I almost bet the other 20 are boring analog watches with round dials... ;-)
The P2 is definitely a noteworthy watch, the design is a timeless classic. Not overdone, but not too simple. Perfect shape and proportions. 8-)

66Cooper - as a thrice married guy, I would suggest you could encourage your wife's interest. Buy some for her - Valentines Day is coming up. :-D

Unfortunately, her more focused interest on yours and her's digital watches, you would have decreased luck at bringing new pieces into your house via stealth discovery , i.e. " what this, I've had it for years, just got it out?" !@@!

I will shamelessly plug the two pages of Ladies digital on my site.

Yep, I already am looking for another for her. I wanted the P2 for the Bond connection but I think it has one of the best overall looks for these LED watches. That said, a P3 date would be a great find for my wife.

My collection is pretty different and I think interesting. I own all the Bond digitals which are all very different in size and shape. Even my "normal" watches are not ordinary by most standards. The P2 just certainly has something the others dont, that is for sure. Wearing again today. That is not the norm for me. I guess I'm in love.

My wife particularly likes the pendant style http://www.retroleds.com/Items/WA251.htm as she can check the time during a meeting or seminar(does a lot of those for her work) and nobody knows she is checking the time. A woman briefly handling a necklace and looking down doesn't register to most people as "time checking".

Hi 66Cooper, please share some pictures with us. I'm also a Bond watch fan and have most of the digitals, but some aren't the exact model "5010" instead of "5000", that sort of thing. Seeing all of these Bond digitals lined up would be cool.

(sorry - don't mean to divert the thread)

Not a problem. I dont have a recent lineup shot of them all. I will take some (long overdue) and post soon.
I hear you on the slight off models. I have a few as well. My current collection are as follows in order as they appear in movie:

Breitling Top Time Ref 2003
Pulsar P2
Seiko 0674-5009 Front button
Seiko A159-4019-G (promo poster watch)
Seiko M354-5010 Memory Bank
Seiko H357-5040 Duo Time (own 3)
Seiko 7549-7009 600m Golden Tuna
Seiko G757-5020 Sports 100 on Rubber
Seiko G757-5000 Silver Wave
Seiko T001 TV Watch. Box and 2 sets of cables and receivers

I also have a MKII Kingston Plank 1 on its way sometime soon.

I am also currently working on a reproduction of the case for the Top Time to convert it into the Geiger counter seen in Thunderball.

Needless to say, I am a Bond junky. I have owned a lot of these watches and have sold and traded and swapped a bunch over the past 2-3 years of collecting them. Hopefully I can get some pix up.

One thing to keep in mind with my collection is that ALL of these are worn in my regular rotation of watches. Like my cars, I get no pleasure in staring at them in a garage but rather, using them as they were intended. Enjoy!

8-) Thanks for sharing the pics 66Cooper.
I like those analogues with the 'extra seconds hands' function. :-P
BTW- which Bond movie was the Breitling Top Time Ref 2003 featured in? Any of the Omegas in your collection?

The Breitling was used in Thunderball. In the movie it had a larger, custom designed case for it though. It was the first gadget watch that Q-Branch gave Bond and it was used as a Geiger counter.
I am actually in the process of building a replica of that case that will fit over the original Top Time case. I have a thread about it on:
ajb007.co.uk under Geiger watch.

Thanks for the comments. I love them all. So far no Omegas. Not really a huge fan but might have to get one at some point. Right now I am just waiting for my MKII Kingston which is a homage of the Rolex worn by Connery in the first few Bond films. The "big crown" Submariner.

Thuderball. Yes, it's been a while since I've seen that one.
Cool- you have a very impressive Bond-Watch colleciton going there.
About the Rolex Submariner - I guess it will always be considered the "Crown Jewel" of the Bond Watches, and the most expensive one too.

Indeed. The Rolex Sub 6538 big crown is a very sought after watch and usually commands at least 30k to own. At that price, I am not sure I could really enjoy wearing it. The Kingston is the perfect compromise.

How does the Kinston look in comparison to the Submariner 6538?
Pretty much 'the same' to the untrained observer?

Somewhat. It is a modern inturp of it. It is larger and thicker then original. I guess it all depends on the eyes looking:-)
I can tell you that vintage (smaller) watches all seem to have a very different look and feel then modern watches. I can spot them from a mile away. Very small difference make a very big impact overall

Yes, that's true. Often times the older watches seem so little compared to modern watches. But on the other hand, I think many of these "contemporary styles" are just too dang big. Many just aren't comfortable on my wrist. I never got into the 'wall clock on my wrist' look.
One of the reasosn why I like vintage digitals. :-)

I am all over the place. I own a 44mm Panerai and the Seiko Tuna above is something like 51mm. Then I have the 36mm Top Time and a Bulova Accutron Spaceview. And everything in between I guess:-)
