Watches in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Post16 Mar 2011, 13:33

Just finished reading the whole ´Collectors set´ again and the wiki page on the in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is góód:

´Earth's population are described in the first novel as "so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea."
When Arthur Dent loses his left arm as a consequence of the Infinite Improbability Drive, he panics upon realising he can no longer operate his digital watch.
Hyperintelligent pan-dimensional beings built the supercomputer Deep Thought in part to comprehend why people spend so much of their lives wearing digital watches.

In the 1970s, when the series was first composed, digital watches were the height of techno-fashion.´

They still are , only now in the form of the Nano and the EPD

That part made me believe the Arthur must have been wearing an LED watch. LCDs can be used (though not operated) one-armed.

Hm, can't remember that one. Think I have to read again...

BTW: did anyone who saw the movie notice any digital watches?

The book was conceived in the sventies, the movie in the nineties. It was true to the thought but thus uses the mobile phone which ofcourse did away with arm panic.

About the 80ties tv series I dont know. Should have still been a diigital watch albeit lcd.

Today is would be an nano on a strap or an epd watch, with the left arm panic kept as intended.

Today it would be appropriate to have Deep Thought figure out the reverence of the hopelessly archaic mechanicals.

Sorry Huertecilla, the 'Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey" was a comedy routine that was broadcast on US televison in the 1990's (no doubt other countries as well). I don't know if it is on Spain's TV stations? It was a on-going skit from the TV show "Saturday Night Live" or S.N.L. for short. It doesn't have any relation to the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, other than sharing the phrase "Deep Thought(s)".... AFAIK anyway. :o

Ahhh, so you think we need a Jack-Handy-esque little feature where you guys could plug in terse comments about malfunctioning digital watches? Oh snap! That's what a forum is.
