: If you had the chance to purchase a P1...

Post10 Jun 2011, 14:04

Unfortunately, no boxes or manual, but a watch in very nice cosmetic and working condition. Also, did have the setting magnet, a BIG plus. That makes eight, including the unique 14K one, which was a fully-complete "kit". I've binned my framed copy of the "Twilight Zone" pic...

No.
I had the chance to buy, but all I had to work with was about $200.00
My friend who purchased this watch for $3500.00 , left it to me to find him a buyer. I got to wear this for a whole day, and photograph it :O`~
NICE WATCH!
Thank you Bruce for the opportunity, and pleasure of handling this purchase for you,
Benrus

And thanks to you for helping me add another "found" treasure to my collection. It could not have happened without you.

I promise, I will get to that eventually, but in the meantime, if you find yourself in the San Diego area, drop by and see them in person; much better than any photograph.

I have also had the opportunity to have a look at this watch in the flesh thanks to a friendly fellow collector and I was very impressed by the quality and feel of the watch. $3500.00 seems very reasonable to me, is this the current value of the P1 or is it to be considered a bargain?

I paid a good bit over $3500 for it, but I would still consider I got a good deal. Some minor touch-ups of the brushing, and some re-polishing of the mirror surfaces, and it looks like it never left the factory. BTW, I'm curious how you saw this in person...fortuitous timing, to say the least...

When I said "this watch" I was referring to the P1 not the actual watch photographed - sorry for the confusion.

Ah, gotcha! But, it WAS a bit ambiguous... Anyway, three or four years ago, a double-boxed, complete watch (magnet, instruction manual, and working) would have set you back $10-12K; now the same thing goes on eBay for less than eight grand, and a loose watch goes for $5-6K, tops. I bought my first P1 back in January of 2005, and this is probably the closest the melt and collectors' value on a P1 has been in twenty years. Right now, it's a tight economy, and a buyer's market, rarity notwithstanding. As I've said before, it's times like this that force such things out into the open, because people need money, but there's hardly anybody out there with spare cash to do any buying. The market WILL recover, eventually, but how long that might take is anybody's guess.

Right you are Bruce! I really have to carve out some time to take a trip down to San Diego and visit you and your impressive collection. I haven't forgotten... 8-)

Any time...a day's advance notice would be good, so I can make sure everything's here. Just bring a good camera, and be prepared to spend the better part of a day...
