Times have changed

Post02 Aug 2011, 22:09

Came across an interesting story about the 0634:

´I bought this watch in 1975 as it was the first LCD Chronograph I had seen.
I was seduced by the digital read out in tenths of a second, so it replaced the Rolex 6238 I had been wearing daily since 1968.
The Seiko cost USD 300 which made it about 50% more expensive than it's mechanical predecessor.´

Just reflect on that.

From a 200$

to a 300$

In today´s world the Seiko EPD costs 900 Euros and the Rolex GMT 5.500 Euros.

A vintage Rolex 6238 tops 20.000 Euros easy whereas the Seiko 0634 is some 200.

Mind you, in both cases there are more Rolexi about.

Not much apparently. The idea of a mechanical being 'superior' to a Digital is still alive and well. And I would still go for the Seiko over the Rolex.

True, but you have to keep in mind that the 70's Seiko was "all new technology" - "revolutionary" - "the biggest change in timekeeping in 1 Million years" (or something to that affect  ). Now LCD displays are passe', they are everwhere. It seems that these original LCDs are finally getting the respect they deserve. But modern digitals...... I guess they just don't have that 'jewelry' appeal that the Omega, Rolex, etc have.

Perception.

In this case created by Biver & Hayek starting mid eighties.

It was/is a two sided sword; when promoting the qualities of a traditional product, then this has the inverse effect on the least so one.

This is true Huertecilla. But the good news is, it makes the watches we all love (the digitlas) more affordable. We can better afford that 'holy grail' we are after, or simply buy more!
