Ruby Crystals

Post09 Feb 2012, 15:53

Anyone an idea how they made these pulsar red ruby chrystals? Where do you find the base material. I know how to cut these so if i have a source of bigger red crystals, i can cut it myself.

The glass is easy enough to find, but you also need to know how to anneal(soften) the glass - you can only cut and grind untempered glass. But tempered glass has a much harder surface against minimal scratches, so knowing how to retemper it will help too.

I have unlogoed, NOS PUlsar P2/P3 glass for sale.

i pretty sure i can cut hardened glass..did it before..i use diamond stones to cut.
and some say..the hardened glass will break while grinding but i'm not that sure..tried 2 or 3 times to cut other hardened glass and it worked.

Hardness is relative and very hard to check in glass. Unless you have worked with tempered and untempered items of the same material, and gone back and forth, it is easy to miss how different the work is. The same piece of glass if tempered will almost explode upon having it's surface broke, if lightly annealled(softened by heating to 700-900f. ,sorry, no metric/English converter here anymore) it can be cut, scored and ground if not treated too roughly, annealed twice like "double strength" window glass it becomes easy to cut, score and snap, etc. Most household ovens that have a cleaning cycle get just barely hot enough to anneal glass a little. Can make the difference between success and failure. But there are good, small tabletop units for doing it right.

I have about 500 red time screens that aren't beveled. If you knew what you were doing, you could probably finish them to fit any Pulsar from the P2-P3 to the mens dress model. I also have a few of the curved glass pieces for the p4 that aren't beveled either. Greg Ratcliff gsratman1@comcast.net
