Photos of my Wittnauer Polara LED

Post01 Mar 2013, 17:33

Hey guys,

I had to go through an old computer hard drive I had, and stumbled on a file that had lots of photos in it, but the coolest ones were these photos I had kept of my Wittnauer Polara, the photos were taken by our forums very own Mr Frequency 32768hz at least around 2007.

I was so glad to find these as I thought they were lost forever, and the photographs were so well done I figured I'd post them up for reference. I still greatly enjoy my Polara LED so thanks again Lloyd, it's given me years of enjoyment and counting.

A lovely watch, these are quality watches, well produced and great on the wrist. I have one in goldtone with a goldtone bracelet.

I'm trying to find the picture with all of the Wittnauer's on my floor. Must of had 200 at one point in total, ( a few really unusual ones too). The place where i got them from had two more big boxes. I went back and they said they couldn't find them ? hmmm.

Amazing. More amazing that you yourself had so many Wittnauer LED's at one time, they look neat stacked up like that in the photos. I have to agree they are great timepieces and look great when you have to wear a suit and tie. I'm guessing people realised at that place that those other boxes were probably worth more than they thought. In the decade since I started collecting, it's amazing to see how much less often we see all of these watches, the DSM's too.

Please post the photo if you do find it Lloyd, it's pretty fun seeing the large collections. :-D

incredible shot, it's a pity that these good old days are gone.
Try to find a ledwatch on a fleamarket here in Europe..almost impossible.

I should find the phone number of the old supplier and see if they found the last two boxes. Probably not after all these years. I'm still having dreams wondering what was in the other two boxes. I guess that whats make collecting interesting.

This is the only other picture i could find.
Ive posted some other pictures Ive found in different sections on the forum.

Impressive collection of Wittnauer's :mega:

I like the square dual display watches, I have a couple of those, one of which has a grey dial the same as in the photo's the other has a blue dial, I cannot see that one in the photograph although it might be lurking somewhere in the mix.

I did spot this one that I have not seen before with a cream and gold dial.....

Image

Do you remember how many different colour dials you had? Curious to know how many different variations were produced.

They all had grey dials. Only one gold with cream inlay. I have one with a blue face, but it's a shop display dummy with a printed LED.

Here's my blue dial purchased from 'retroleds', I think Ed had three on offer at the time that I purchased this one, I think I also purchased the grey dial one that I have from Ed but I can't remember what colour the other one was that he had for sale.

The one on the left looks like a ladies (cut down) version of this watch, I think you already have (or have had) this watch.

Image

The one to the right looks cool, never seen one though.

I still have my artificial gem stone Witt. I would never sell it, probably one of my favorites. Finding the ladies version would be a nice touch. Never seen one in all the years of collecting, or that other style LED/LCD version.

I think I just noticed my Polara 125 in the bottom right corner....bought from this pile 10 years ago and still with me :)
The Golden Era of LED watches was really neat back in those days, now the market changed and also half or more of the collectors have lost their interest.

I believe you did buy both the blue and grey from me - the last one was sort of a pumpkin orange with grey. One of those odd deals where someone had a handful of NOS case, I handed them a fistful of cash. And of course those dual modules I had picked up 8(9?) years ago. Diginut had one of the red-stoned Witts he got off me but I believe he sold it off a while back - Lloyds is missing most of the original "silver" plating but still is a stunner..

I believe the one I have photographed was purchased from Diginut, I think he caved in to my pitiful begging. ;-)

No, the one I sold him had virtually complete plateing(touch of loss maybe at the high points.) But maybe he tried to polish and burned through the plating. I've done it myself - when the back says "base metal" that means "regardless of how shiny it is that is only a surface finish, don't get crazy mf'r!" "Oh, but I just want a little shine" "TFB - the shine stops here." Of all the stupid icons here there isn't one for sobbing?

Hi Bucko,
I bought this watch not too long ago (the case only) and I would like to know a little bit more about the right module for it and what kind of band would best fit it. Could you help in this issue?
Thank you.

The watch contains a Hughes Aircraft 29mm module, the one that is fitted in the watch is a dot display module which I think would be the correct module for the age of the watch (1974). If you do not want to stick to the original there are several different variations of the Hughes 29mm module; dot display, line segment display and several choices to be made when it comes to functions, hours, minutes, seconds, AM/PM dot indicator, continuous seconds, month, date, 24 hour display, day of the week display, European display modules, fixed message modules and of course the programmable message display modules which allow you to display your own choice of message (five words of up to five letters).

It is a nice case and deserves to have a module fitted, luckily enough they are quite easy to find and watches containing the 29mm Hughes modules are common on eBay, look for watches with the same button lay out (commands at 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock, set button at 3 o'clock) and ask the seller for confirmation that it has a Hughes inside to be sure before bidding or contact Ed Cantarella at Retroleds he will have a range of options for you including the programmable modules..... http://retroleds.com/product/hughes-29mm/ MrFrequency AKA Lloyd was selling the European modules not so long back, these had the day of week display in another language (Spanish - I think) and also the 24 hour display or put up a wanted post here on the forum.

The band fitted to the watch photographed is branded Wittnauer and looks (to me) to be original, the watch has a lug width of 24mm and the fitted band has a maximum width of 29mm at the lug end extending past either side of the lugs where it fits to the case, the case is quite big and square so this sort of band does suit the watch and would be the way to go in my opinion.

Hope this helps.
