Hi.

This weekend, I was refinishing a P2 and needed to replace the crystal. Unfortunately, our oven is on the fritz. Looking around the kitchen, I spied the toaster in the corner. Using a clothspin to gently lower the case into the toaster, after about 5 minutes, ding! Toasts up - with a little push, the crystal popped right out.

The toaster technique worked perfectly. With the radiant heat of the coils, I'm guessing that you may also be applying heat more directly to the crystal epoxy and less to the button solder, which is always a worry in the oven.

I've always used a hair dryer, never had the balls to put one in an oven.

Interesting!!! I guess there are always different ways to get from A-B and a toaster is one way. Glad it worked out!! I have always used a Weller Industrial heat gun. I have never needed to try plan "B" aka oven/toaster etc.. So far!!! I would probably not have any experience in crystal replacement but the ones I have done were due to purchases that stated 'Minty' or near perfect crystal and they were "far" from it. The Pitfalls of dishonest sellers. Sad part of this hobby!!

I've purchased a NOS P2 red crystal off the bay to have just in case, but since my P2 crystal has the "Tiffany & Co" lettering on it, I'll just keep it original, scratches and all!
