WARNING - EBAY/PAYPAL PHISHING ALERT!!!!! READ THIS TODAY

Post16 Sep 2006, 17:26

Folks:
Got an email from PAyPal this marning, seemed like a fairly normal email since I was still kind of groogy, but I did wonder," I don't recognize this item, a Mido Multi Star". But rather than click their "Dispute this Transaction" button I started searching my ebay history, then did an advanced ssearch against all Mido watches with "star" in their title - nothing even close!! Now I was fully awake! Went back to the email and clicked the dispute link:
WOW!!! What a well crafted fake of the PayPal log in screen....but the URL was all wrong.
ht(inserted this so you can get stupid with it)tp://www.paypal.com.inside73.com/secure/

Remember - it must have NOTHING but "paypal.com" between the "www" and the very first "/" . ALWAYS!!! :x

Yeah, thats good advice little1up. The clue is always in the link. Over the years, i've had a few if these bogus Paypal or ebay emails. Usualy it's a 'warning, we have identified a security problem with your account, login below to verify your details'. I just pass the details onto paypal, but I have no idea if they take, can take any action.

PayPal is on it, they've already verified it is bogus.

A common one now is to receive an e-mail saying something like;
I have posted your item but have not yet received payment, or
about the item I have bought from you.
You then realise that the reply now button on the e-mail takes you to a bogus log in page to get your login details.
This is in addition to the fishing e-mails about your account that needs verification.
As you say keep alert and never ever go to a website via an e-mail.

I received an email from Ebay today saying that their records show my credit card was about to expire, and they need me to update it with them. Why would Ebay need my credit card number? Is this real or is it a spoof?

Spoof I'd think...since when do you ever pay ebay directly for anything?Go to ebay, log in, and check your account info....if your card expires this month I could see them notifying you...but then again, you probably have just got a new card if that is the case, and now a good time to update it.

If you are a seller (as well as a buyer) you might be prompted by ebay to renew your details, so that there are no problems when you have to settle up future listing fees. However do always make any amendments via the ebay website, not via link emailed to you. Even if an email is genuine, I feel more comfortable accessing ebay by clicking the link in the 'favourites' selection of my browser.
